Vowels are indicated in Thai orthography by symbols added to the preceding consonants. Some of the vowels symbols will be written above, some below, some before, and some after the consonant symbols. In some cases, a vowels will occupy more than one of these positions.

In the following description, a " อ " is used to indicate the various consonant symbols, and the vowel is drawn in relation to it.

Diphthongs

A diphthong is a combination of vowels pronounced together as one syllable. There are three such combinations in Thai.

Special Vowel Symbols:

Notes:

1. Most vowels are in pair of short and long.

2. Some vowels are written before the consonants, some after, some above, and some below.

3. A vowel that consists of one symbol is called a ‘simple vowel’ and one that consists of more than one symbol is called a ‘compound vowel’. A compound vowel is a combination of simple vowels.

4. ออ , consonant No. 41 in the consonant symbols list, is actually a symbols to indicate the absence of consonant value. Thai is, it is used to show that the position in which it appears consists of vowel only.

5. The special vowels have some arbitrary rules to govern them as follow:

ํา /am/ is used in a pure Thai word which is pronounced with the vowel /a/ followed by /m/.

Example :

cam จำ 'remember' , 'memorize'

dam ดำ 'black'

kam กำ 'grab'

ั ม /am/ is the symbol used in a load word.

อักษรไทย เป็นอักษรที่ใช้เขียนภาษาไทย และภาษากลุ่มน้อยอื่นๆ ในประเทศไทย มีพยัญชนะ 44 รูป สระ 21 รูป วรรณยุกต์ 4 รูป และเครื่องหมายอื่นๆ อีกจำนวนหนึ่ง พยัญชนะไทยจะเรียงตัวไปตามแนวนอน จากซ้ายไปขวา ส่วนสระจะอยู่หน้า บน ล่าง และหลังพยัญชนะประกอบคำแล้วแต่ชนิดของสระ
อักษรไทยไม่มีการแยกอักษรตัวใหญ่หรืออักษรตัวเล็กอย่างอักษรโรมัน และไม่มีการเว้นวรรคระหว่างคำ เมื่อจบหนึ่งประโยคจะลงท้ายด้วยการเว้นวรรค กับมีเครื่องหมายวรรคตอนจำนวนหนึ่ง
ภาษาไทยมีตัวเลขเป็นของตัวเอง แต่นิยมใช้เลขอารบิกเป็นส่วนใหญ่ในชีวิตประจำวัน

สำเนาศิลาจารึกหลักที่ ๑ พ่อขุนรามคำแหง
ราว พ.ศ. 400 ไทยได้อพยพจากถิ่นเดิมมาตั้งภูมิลำเนาอยู่ใกล้อาณาเขตมอญ ซึ่งกำลังเป็นชาติที่เจริญรุ่งเรืองในสมัยนั้น เริ่มแรกคงเริ่มเลียนแบบตัวอักษรมาจากมอญ ต่อมาราว พ.ศ. 1500 เมื่อขอมขยายอำนาจเข้ามาในดินแดนของคนไทยซึ่งตั้งอยู่บริเวณริมแม่น้ำยม และได้ปกครองเมืองเชลียงและเมืองสุโขทัย ไทยก็เริ่มดัดแปลงอักษรที่มีอยู่เดิมให้คล้ายกับอักษรขอมหวัด
อักษรมอญและอักษรขอมที่เรานำมาดัดแปลงใช้นั้นล้วนแปลงรูปมาจากอักษรพราหมี ของพวกพราหมณ์ซึ่งแพร่หลายในอินเดียตอนเหนือ และอักษรสันสกฤตในสมัยราชวงศ์ปัลลวะ ซึ่งแพร่หลายบริเวณอินเดียตอนใต้ อักษรอินเดียทั้งคู่นี้ต่างก็รับแบบมาจากอักษรฟินิเชียนอีกชั้นหนึ่ง อักษรเฟนีเซียนับได้ว่าเป็นอักษรที่เก่าแก่ที่สุด และเป็นแม่แบบตัวอักษรของชาติต่างๆ ทั้งในเอเชียและยุโรป
ราว พ.ศ. 1826 พ่อขุนรามคำแหงทรงประดิษฐ์อักษรไทยที่เรียกกันว่า "ลายสือไทย" ขึ้น ซึ่งได้เค้ารูปจากอักษรอินเดียฝ่ายใต้ รวมทั้งอักษรมอญและเขมรที่มีอยู่เดิม (ซึ่งต่างก็ถ่ายแบบมาจากอักษรอินเดียฝ่ายใต้ทั้งสิ้น) ทำให้อักษรไทยมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกับอักษรทั้งสาม แม้บางตัวจะไม่คล้ายกัน แต่ก็สามารถรู้ได้ว่าดัดแปลงมาจากอักษรตัวไหน
อักษรไทยมีการปรับปรุงอยู่เรื่อยๆ ในสมัยพญาฦๅไทราว พ.ศ. 1900 มีการแก้ไขตัวอักษรให้ผิดเพี้ยนไปบ้างเล็กน้อย โดยเฉพาะการเพิ่มเชิงที่ตัว ญ ซึ่งใช้ติดต่อเรื่อยมาจนทุกวันนี้ คาดว่าน่าจะเอาอย่างมาจากเขมร ในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช ราว พ.ศ. 2223 ตัวอักษรเริ่มมีทรวดทรงดีขึ้นแต่ก็ไม่ทิ้งเค้าเดิม มีบางตัวเท่านั้นที่แก้ไขผิดไปจากเดิม คือตัว ฎ และ ธ ซึ่งเหมือนกับที่ใช้อยู่ในปัจจุบัน นักวิชาการจำนวนหนึ่งเชื่อว่าในสมัยสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช ตัวอักษรและการใช้งานมีความคล้ายคลึงกับในปัจจุบันมากที่สุด

วรรณยุกต์ในภาษาไทย นับเป็นเสียงดนตรีตามตำราภาษาไทยสมัยโบราณ โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 5 เสียง ได้แก่ สามัญ เอก โท ตรี และจัตวา และมีเครื่องหมายกำกับเสียงวรรณยุกต์ ซึ่งเรียกว่า "วรรณยุกต์" ด้วยเช่นกัน โดยที่เครื่องหมายวรรณยุกต์ อาจไม่ได้บ่งบอกถึงเสียงวรรณยุกต์นั้นเสมอไป เว้นแต่เมื่อกำกับคำเป็น ที่มีพยัญชนะต้นเป็นอักษรกลาง
เสียงวรรณยุกต์ไทยตามหลักภาษาศาสตร์ แบ่งได้ดังนี้

อย่างไรก็ตาม ในจารึกสมัยโบราณ เช่น ศิลาจารึกพ่อขุนรามคำแหง มีเครื่องหมายวรรณยุกต์เพียง 2 รูป คือ ไม้เอก ( | ) และไม้โท (+) เช่น น๋อง (น้อง), ห๋า (ห้า)
การผันเสียงวรรณยุกต์
โดยทั่วไปเสียงพยางค์หนึ่งในภาษาไทย สามารถผันได้ 5 เสียงวรรณยุกต์ แต่ในภาษาเขียน จะมีกฎเกณฑ์การผันที่ตายตัว ดังนี้

อักษรต่ำและอักษรสูงไม่สามารถผันให้ครบ 5 เสียงได้ จึงมักจะใช้อักษรเสียงเดียวกันจากอีกหมู่หนึ่งมาใช้เป็นอักษรนำ โดยมีอักษรสูงนำ (ยกเว้นอักษร อ ซึ่งเป็นอักษรกลาง สามารถนำ อักษร ย ได้) เช่น นา หน่า น่า น้า หนา, มี หมี่ มี่ มี้ หมี
ทั้งนี้ ไม่นิยมใช้วรรณยุกต์ตรี และจัตวากำกับอักษรต่ำ เนื่องจากสามารถใช้อักษรสูงนำ เช่น หมี หมา หญิง (ไม่ใช่ มี๋, ม๋า, ยิ๋ง) เป็นต้น

วันภาษาไทยแห่งชาติ

วันภาษาไทยแห่งชาติ ตรงกับวันที่ ๒๙ กรกฎาคม ของทุกปี เพื่อระลึกถึงเหตุการณ์ในวันที่ ๒๙ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๕ ซึ่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงอภิปรายเรื่อง “ปัญหาการใช้คำไทย” ร่วมกับผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิที่ คณะอักษรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย

ที่มาและความสำคัญ
๒๙ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๕ พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดช เสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเป็นประธานและทรงอภิปรายเรื่อง “ปัญหาการใช้คำไทย” ร่วมกับผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิในการประชุมทางวิชาการของชุมนุมภาษาไทย ณ คณะอักษรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ซึ่งทรงแสดงพระปรีชาสามารถและความสนพระราชหฤทัยห่วงใยในภาษาไทย จนเป็นที่ประทับใจผู้เข้าร่วมการประชุมครั้งนั้นเป็นอย่างยิ่ง[1] [2]
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีพระราชดำรัสตอนหนึ่งความว่า

เรามีโชคดีที่มีภาษาของตนเองแต่โบราณกาล จึงสมควรอย่างยิ่งที่จะรักษาไว้ ปัญหาเฉพาะในด้านรักษาภาษานี้ก็มีหลายประการ อย่างหนึ่งต้องรักษาให้บริสุทธิ์ในทางออกเสียง คือ ให้ออกเสียงให้ถูกต้องชัดเจน อีกอย่างหนึ่งต้องรักษาให้บริสุทธิ์ในวิธีใช้ หมายความว่า วิธีใช้คำมาประกอบประโยค นับเป็นปัญหาที่สำคัญ ปัญหาที่สาม คือ ความร่ำรวยในคำของภาษาไทย ซึ่งพวกเรานึกว่าไม่ร่ำรวยพอ จึงต้องมีการบัญญัติศัพท์ใหม่มาใช้...สำหรับคำใหม่ที่ตั้งขึ้นมีความจำเป็น ในทางวิชาการไม่น้อย แต่บางคำที่ง่ายๆก็ควรจะมี ควรจะใช้คำเก่าๆที่เรามีอยู่แล้ว ไม่ควรจะมาตั้งศัพท์ใหม่ให้ยุ่งยาก
รัฐบาลได้ประกาศให้วันนี้เป็นวันสำคัญ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๒

วัตถุประสงค์
คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเมื่อวันอังคารที่ ๑๓ กรกฎาคม ๒๕๔๒ เห็นชอบให้วันที่ ๒๙ กรกฎาคม ของทุกปีเป็นวันภาษาไทยแห่งชาติ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์ ดังนี้ [3]
๑. เพื่อเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวภูมิพลอดุลยเดช ผู้ทรงเป็นนักปราชญ์ และนักภาษาไทย รวมทั้งเพื่อน้อมรำลึกในพระมหากรุณาธิคุณของพระองค์ที่ได้ทรงแสดงความห่วงใย และพระราชทานแนวคิดต่างๆ เกี่ยวกับการใช้ภาษาไทย
๒. เพื่อร่วมเฉลิมพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เนื่องในมหามงคลสมัยเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา ๖ รอบ ในวันที่ ๕ ธันวาคม ๒๕๔๒
๓. เพื่อกระตุ้นและปลุกจิตสำนึกของคนไทยทั้งชาติให้ตระหนักถึงความสำคัญและคุณ ค่าของภาษาไทย ตลอดจนร่วมมือร่วมใจกันทำนุบำรุงส่งเสริม และอนุรักษ์ภาษาไทย ซึ่งเป็นเอกลักษณ์และเป็นสมบัติวัฒนธรรมอันล้ำค่าของชาติให้คงอยู่คู่ชาติ ไทยตลอดไป
๔. เพื่อเพิ่มพูนประสิทธิภาพในการใช้ภาษาไทย ทั้งในวงวิชาการและวิชาชีพ รวมทั้งเพื่อยกมาตรฐานการเรียนการสอนภาษาไทยในสถานศึกษาทุกระดับให้มี สัมฤทธิผลยิ่งขึ้น
๕. เพื่อเปิดโอกาสให้หน่วยงานต่างๆ ทั้งภาครัฐบาลและเอกชนทั่วประเทศมีส่วนร่วมในการจัดกิจกรรมที่หลากหลาย เพื่อเผยแพร่ความรู้ภาษาไทยในรูปแบบต่างๆ ไปสู่สาธารณชนทั้งในฐานะที่เป็นภาษาประจำชาติ และในฐานะที่เป็นภาษาเพื่อการสื่อสารของทุกคนในชาติ

Learning to Speak Thai

The main problem with learning to speak Thai is that the basis of the language is not European-based. English and the other Euro languages have Latin, Greek, Viking, etc., roots; Thai does not, so you have to memorize hundreds, if not thousands, of strange and unrelated sounds. This is difficult, unless you use some sort of memory trigger.

Speak Easy Thai is a low-cost (about US$25) CD-ROM that helps solve this problem by presenting a picture and a sound file; all words are spoken by a native Thai speaker, so you hear the correct tone.

If you see a Thai word printed in a book, such as a travel guide, chances are you will not remember the word because there is nothing to hang your hat on.

But when you see a picture of something and hear it spoken properly in Thai, your brain will find it much easier to remember the word because it seems to set up more associations (hypertext links, if you will) in your brain.

It’s a fact that most people learn better visually and aurally than they do by simply reading and trying to memorize. This is, in fact, how children learn. They hear the words spoken by adults and other children, and repeat them. Young children learn to speak a language well before they can read.

Thai uses its own alphabet, rather than pictograms like Chinese, which makes it much easier to learn than Chinese. You just have to get over the hump of reading the Thai characters. The alphabet contains the same letters as English, but they are drawn differently. For example, all the common consonants and vowels exist in Thai, but a Thai G (or P or M) does not look like an English G (or P or M).

But the best part of learning Thai is the grammar, believe it or not, because there is very little to learn. There are no, absolutely NO verb conjugations, which will please anyone who has ever tried to learn one of the Latin-based languages like French, Italian, and Spanish. Future tense is handled with "ja", meaning "will", or by adding an adverb of time, like "tomorrow". Past tense is handled by putting "already" at the end, or by adding an adverb of time, like "yesterday". For example, instead of saying, "I went to the market", you use the present tense ("go") but add "already" at the end, as in "I go market already". Easy peasy.

Also, adjectives do not change form, you don’t have to worry about the sex of a noun because all nouns are neuter. Adjectives always follow the noun, without exception; you say "house big" rather than "big house".

General plurals are done by doubling the noun: "house house" instead of "houses". Specific plurals use the same construction we use in English for groups, as in "The farmer has three head of cattle". You can’t say "I have three children" in Thai, you must say "I have child three person"; "child" is the noun, "person" is the group word, also known as a "classifier".

Adverbs are easy too, no variations. You can add emphasis by doubling the adverb: "He runs quickly quickly".

The most difficult part of learning Thai is that it is a tonal language. English uses tones on sentences. Compare these three statements:

"You’re going to the party."
"You’re going to the party?"
"You’re going to the party!"

They all use the same English words, but the tone (flat, rising, falling, respectively) gives an entirely different meaning to each sentence.

Thai uses tones on words, but not on sentences. For example, "seu-ah" spoken with a flat (mid-range) tone means "clothing"; "seu-ah" spoken with a rising tone means "tiger". So you must be careful to learn the correct tone for each word, otherwise you might be saying "my tiger is dirty" when what you meant is "my clothing is dirty". There is no doubt that this is the hardest part of learning Thai, and the only way to learn the correct tone is to listen to a native Thai speaker saying the word.

ภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาที่มีระดับเสียงของคำแน่นอนหรือวรรณยุกต์เช่นเดียวกับภาษาจีน และออกเสียงแยกคำต่อคำ เป็นที่ลำบากของชาวต่างชาติเนื่องจาก การออกเสียงวรรณยุกต์ที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ของแต่ละคำ และการสะกดคำที่ซับซ้อน นอกจากภาษากลางแล้ว ในประเทศไทยมีการใช้ ภาษาไทยถิ่นอื่นด้วย

คำว่า ไทย หมายความว่า อิสรภาพ เสรีภาพ หรืออีกความหมายหนึ่งคือ ใหญ่ ยิ่งใหญ่ เพราะการจะเป็นอิสระได้จะต้องมีกำลังที่มากกว่า แข็งแกร่งกว่า เพื่อป้องกันการรุกรานจากข้าศึก แม้คำนี้จะมีรูปเหมือนคำยืมจากภาษาบาลีสันสกฤต แต่แท้ที่จริงแล้ว คำนี้เป็นคำไทยแท้ที่เกิดจากกระบวนการสร้างคำที่เรียกว่า 'การลากคำเข้าวัด' ซึ่งเป็นการลากความวิธีหนึ่ง ตามหลักคติชนวิทยา คนไทยเป็นชนชาติที่นับถือกันว่า ภาษาบาลีซึ่งเป็นภาษาที่บันทึกพระธรรมคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าเป็นภาษาอันศักดิ์สิทธิ์และเป็นมงคล เมื่อคนไทยต้องการตั้งชื่อประเทศว่า ไท ซึ่งเป็นคำไทยแท้ จึงเติมตัว ย เข้าไปข้างท้าย เพื่อให้มีลักษณะคล้ายคำในภาษาบาลีสันสกฤตเพื่อความเป็นมงคลตามความเชื่อของตน ภาษาไทยจึงหมายถึงภาษาของชนชาติไทยผู้เป็นไทนั่นเอง

เสียงสัทอักษรพยัญชนะในภาษาไทย (เสียงแปร) มีอยู่ด้วยกัน 21 เสียง

สระ
เสียงสระในภาษาไทยแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ชนิดคือ สระเดี่ยว สระประสม และสระเกิน
สระเดี่ยว คือสระที่เกิดจากฐานเพียงฐานเดียว มีทั้งสิ้น 18 เสียง

วรรณยุกต์
เสียงวรรณยุกต์ ในภาษาไทย (เสียงดนตรีหรือเสียงผัน) จำแนกออกได้เป็น 5 เสียง ได้แก่
เสียงสามัญ (ระดับเสียงกึ่งสูง-กลาง)
เสียงเอก (ระดับเสียงกึ่งต่ำ-ต่ำ)
เสียงโท (ระดับเสียงสูง-ต่ำ)
เสียงตรี (ระดับเสียงกึ่งสูง-สูง)
เสียงจัตวา (ระดับเสียงกึ่งต่ำ-ต่ำ-กึ่งสูง)

ไวยากรณ์
ภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาคำโดด คำในภาษาไทยจะไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปไม่ว่าจะอยู่ในกาล (tense) การก (case) มาลา (mood) หรือวาจก (voice) ใดก็ตาม คำในภาษาไทยไม่มีลิงก์ (gender) ไม่มีพจน์ (number) ไม่มีวิภัตติปัจจัย แม้คำที่รับมาจากภาษาผันคำ (ภาษาที่มีวิภัตติปัจจัย) เป็นต้นว่าภาษาบาลีสันสกฤต เมื่อนำมาใช้ในภาษาไทย ก็จะไม่มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงรูป คำในภาษาไทยหลายคำไม่สามารถกำหนดหน้าที่ของคำตายตัวลงไปได้ ต้องอาศัยบริบทเข้าช่วยในการพิจารณา เมื่อต้องการจะผูกประโยค ก็นำเอาคำแต่ละคำมาเรียงติดต่อกันเข้า ภาษาไทยมีโครงสร้างแตกกิ่งไปทางขวา คำคุณศัพท์จะวางไว้หลังคำนาม ลักษณะทางวากยสัมพันธ์โดยรวมแล้วจะเป็นแบบ 'ประธาน-กริยา-กรรม'
